There goes the adage. Apropos to the news published about closing of shops & malls on Tuesdays to protect labors from exploitation is uncalled for. Globalization & liberalization are the pillars for tomorrow for a developing nation like ours & imposing restrictions would mar the very spirits of these cornerstones. After issuing labor law of 2006 exempting IT, ITES & malls from the restrictions on working hours & days, government has made a nosedive. Instead, what should have been done was to read the sentiments of employed staff/workers in Malls & shops. To get rid of exploitation, govt. needs to come up with visionary ideas rather than the more immediate ones. A clandestine survey amongst the employees should have been the first move in judging their plight & coming up with the issue. Considering the start of Common-wealth games in 2010, what an impression would govt. form towards tourists & entities flocking in from across the world? Mall(s), if not sufficient, but necessarily is a platform to showcase INDIA growing. We are heading to the future of having around 600 million sq. feet under malls by 2010, so why these crippling policies!!! Instead, beating exploitation could have been done by keeping a timely "undercover" check that employees/staff are working on rotational basis/ shifts and no employee is under-paid for the work done; everyone get the due worth of number of input hours and healthy working conditions. Keeping a day off would increase ample pressure on over-heads and running costs of the malls, which would percolate down to shop owners/staffers and have an adverse impact. The decision to have liquor available for extended hours in hotels/restaurants under permitted license is far open & timely than imposing a day off on Malls/shops.
It is the right time for Bhupinder Singh government to come up with wiser decisions to protect employees/staff from exploitation; protect the strong vote-base out of metropolitan culture & working segment and set an example for total liberal policies followed & finally, to have Gurgaon as a millennium city in real sense.
