HOLI HAI…
Since morning, we’ve been receiving mails/forwards to extend our heartiest wishes for HOLI. It’s almost a week or two before we start anticipating for the day to arrive with a plethora of reasons for each n every individual. Some long for the blessed holiday out of monotonous life while others crave for the spirit of joy behind colors in their dull, but not morbid life. There are few of us who consider it to be an occasion to meet the ones we’ve long cherished to meet, and few who would want to relinquish all past enmities’ and build a strong future. But have we really contemplated about what does India, our motherland expect out of us on this occasion??
Have we really thought, before eating those mouth watering dishes like Malpuda, Dahi Wada, gujia etc., what this country craves for ages??
It is high time we start thinking about it. Holi, as the festival of colors, signify not just their presence on one particular day, but for that matter, philosophically yet so realistically, their presence behind rudeness towards our elders, the presence behind our ignorance towards the poor lot, and the presence behind complacency towards responsibilities. Not to be narrowed down to a festival to enjoy rainbow splash momentarily but to incorporate people from all races, economically and socially to relish it for an eternity. Forget the social differences, and blend with each the way colors do in their truest sense.
Holi, as the tradition goes, is undefined without water. Young kids with China guns and small grenades (pun intended!!) splash them across each other, mischievously play with uncle n aunties, but what about the grown ups?? Do we think about those people who crave for a single drop of water not just for irrigational purposes but for basic amenities? Are we really justified in wasting the water the way it could have been preserved on first hand??? India, the motherland of farmers, with it’s tropical varsities, has 68% land-area prone to droughts, we get only 4% of total global supply of fresh water and that too largely goes unpreserved. And by wasting it in huge amounts on occasions of Holi, mar the true spirits of the festival. As per a study, the amount of water used for Holi in Maharashtra alone, would cater to irrigational requirements of Rajasthan for entire year. Quite bizarre information, try gulping it down the throat with small water lump!!!
An urban kid playing around finds it highly exhilarating to use his pocket guns and hit the strangers/relatives, think about the child in some remote village, flocking kilometers and carrying the same ‘liquid’ in small water pouch equally exhilarated after saving it from the tortures inflicted by the SUN (wonder who is playing Holi here).
This article does not intend to discourage someone from playing HOLI, but a mere quandary to think within and play practically considering the future for our Nation into account in real honest sense.
Wishing you all a very Happy Holi…
